i remember..

she was told that when she was very young, no more than a year old, there were many nights where she cried and cried and there was nothing her parents could do to calm her.

one day her mother accidentally dropped an old shirt she head been wearing into the cradle. she immediately stopped crying and fell asleep.

she remembers that with amusement and a tinge of sadness, sitting in the car seat where her mother used to sit, sniffing the car seatbelt that still has traces of her smell, and misses her.

it's days like these..:)

and so i was rudely woken up by the Old Man's yelling at around 8 but felt rebellious and decided to sleep in just a bit more. was rewarded by my guilty conscience by a dream in which i was involved in a car accident with a paikia(gangster) (??!!) and Old Man had to settle the matter and I felt horribly guilty.

finally woke up and went to get my godma and the three of us went in search of Ah Mei Laksa which moved from Highway Cafe after the King Centre flyover toBig Horse Cafe in Sekama, on Jalan Foochow No.1.
sound familiar? yes lynn, it was the elusive tu kha peng kopitiam we were looking for that afternoon! we went in the wrong end of the road i think...

the name reminds me of a friend. lol. inside joke.

anyhooz shall post about Ah Mei Laksa another day, that lady is in serious need of publicity cos she is Kuching's best kept laksa secret. didn't feel like eating laksa so, tu kha peng review #2!but first!! there was this car in front of us as we were on our way and the back was FILLEDD as in FILLLED with rubbish! empty mineral water bottles and the like (click photo for larger albeit still crappy image :D). is it that difficult to find a rubbish bin in Kuching?ok so not very good photo but i was SO hungry..you understand :) and HAH the rice was not sticky and clumped together at all, meat was juicy and flavoursome, and the dark soup broth thing was really hearty and you could see bits of thing floating at the bottom which is always an indication of good soup!

(have interesting story to tell about previous tu kha peng place but ill consult with others to see if it is appropriate for public blogging and not an endangerment to my..errm..life :s) here is the stall for reference if you can't find it :D anyway the price was extremely reasonable, rm5 for such a large plate of meat. i could barely finish it all, but i managed :D
we went over to Koko(aunt)'s place with 2 tapao(takeaway)'s of laksa and found she was in the midst of making mooncakes :)~~~ Godma told me the pumpkin seeds that were a part of the mooncake mixture was really expensive, i forgot the price but will update later. these are the balled-up fillings for the mooncake, she made about 40 in all.
Pressing the filling into the outer pastry layer which is made out of flour and golden syrup.....before pressing it into the mold.
Finished product, before baking. the chinese words say mooncake i think. zhong something yue bing? lol. yeah, the chinese is still at crap level :S
Old Man was looking for chest of drawers and shelves for his room, so we went over to Casa Gothic on Deshon Road. I have been dragged around Kuching by my darling mother over the past years to various furniture stores, so like it or not, I've developed a taste for wood furniture and to my untrained eye, Casa Gothic has got some pretty good solid pieces. Old Man saw a few things he liked so i guess i'll be seeing them in my house soon :)
went to search for another furniture store along Gambier Street in town, but Sunday = impossible to find parking. just HAD to post this photo, this building has become too ugly for words :S

Old Man said in the Mediterranean somewhere they have rows of houses all painted in varying bright colours as well, i argued that was quaint and this was just ridiculous. Old Man then countered that the angmoh tourists would possibly find this quaint as well.

Yeah. Right.
Pit stop at Godma's house before heading up to the countryside (?) to hunt for prawns. Chek Hup brand Ipoh White Coffee is OMG SO GOOD. yes i am raving about 2-in-1 instant coffee but try it out yourself and you will see what i mean. Thick, roasted flavour and not too much milk either. No sugar necessary!
First stop, Bako. Was extremely strange driving along that road during the daytime with my family, i saw houses and places I'd never seen before even thought I must have driven there like, 20 times :D no luck with the prawns, but ohh gorgeous view. Have no idea what this river is called, but there were a lot of houses on the other side with the country, state and political party (*aHem*) flags raised and waving in the afternoon breeze.
Sharks for sale in Bako.
Got to Buntal Village, and success! There was exactly (supposedly ;)) one kilo of prawns left at one stall.Big, beautiful and fresh, and at only RM20 per kilo. Didn't take a photo cos was STARVING and my attention was directed only at the lady selling "kueh kuelek". Freshly fried! 5 pieces for RM1!! drool city, and oh boy was it good.ok lousy photo but the ratio of spongy centre to crispy edges were just perfect and it had a light milky caramel taste to it. apparently according to Old Man, kuelek is dialect name for a type of sombrero-ish hat that looks like this kueh. Godma was horrified at the amount of oil, but hey, you only live once :D
ah...beijing memories...san kuai.. mmm...wouldn't it be amazing if you woke up everyday to a view like this? makes you feel like all your troubles are insignificant and pointless, and there is still so much of life left to live. on the way back home, Light FM was playing The Corrs' 'Runaway' and it took me back to when I was 13 and experiencing my first heartbreak. so many things have happened since then, like chapters of a book, the phases of my life have been amazing, painful and surreal.

despite everything, little things, like a pair of glasses, can make me smile and keep me happy for quite a while :)

when your best friends aren't around, there's always their sisters :)

I had to open my big mouth and say i have a food blog tonight, so i've been sort of made to say things in my blog, that i agree with anyway, hence why i have to get it all down now before i forget :S
jane is leaving to canada on wednesday, lucky!! so we went to open air and had tauhu jui (fresh soybean milk). and talked loudly and laughed like how a group of ex-Teresians should ;)
i really like open-air's soybean drink, it was thick and cold and only 80sen! we had two rounds and talked and laughed and made dirty jokes cos jane was there :D
desperately needed the bathroom after all that tauhu jui so went to Scoops Gelato Bar to *pee* and eat ice-cream, yum! normally it's rm8 for a single scoop :S *expensive* but we were feeling cheap tonight and besides jane graciously offered to pay so i went for one of the flagged items which were half price. Espresso flavoured, in a cup.
they were closing so we couldn't stay, but i managed to get a shot of the exterior. it's a pretty nice place to hang out cos there's a club next door that plays good music, tonight was very reminiscent of Beijing, they were playing Umbrella and Summer Love..sigh.. :)and so this is jane's choice, blueberry cream in a cone. sorry for the blur photo, it looked clear at the time i took it :S ate our icecreams in the car as Lynn was lin-lin(driving around)-ing around town. and this is where i have to list evrything down quickly in case i forget!
  • the gelato is over-priced (obviously!)
  • the gelato doesn't taste like gelato
  • the price for the cone and the cup is the same but after Jane had about a third of her icecream, it looked to be about the same amount as what i started out with in my cup
  • there were bits of thing in my icecream that i think were supposed to be either choc or espresso flavoured chips but had the texture and taste of plasticine, not that i've ever eaten plasticine consciously :)
  • the tissue wrapped around the cone stuck to the cone so you had to eat the tissue
  • the cone tastes better than the gelato (without the tissue, obviously)
so we were kai-kai(no translation as yet!)-ing around and saw this police Waja speeding down after the flyover at King Centre. As we got nearer to the Petronas station there were loads of cars parked around and on the side of the road. There seemed to be some sort of incident going on and Lynn being Lynn, we did the uber-Malaysian thing and parked at the side along with all the rest of the sakai people.
at first i thought it was a fight, but there was a Pajero parked at the last lane which the people there manually pushed away to the side of the station. there was maybe some media people there too, i am willing to bet rm50 that they were from one of the Chinese dailies. so first thing tomorrow, i am calling my aunt to find out :)

special thanks to Jane for treating, Lynn for driving, and Liz for being there :D

(this is Lynn's take on tonight)

boring lazy day of doing so much of nothing #2 (not to be read by non-malaysians/singaporeans in case of non-understandingness :D)

i am so DAMN sleepy but still can blog! going to type in Lynn influenced english cos is simple and easyy (of cos not meaning she is simple and easy :S) can't be bothered cos brain dead cos so little sleep till can die sort of thing. but must blog cos i have like a BACKLOG of photos now.ok so kena dragged to lunch at 11sth after sleeping at only 8 am that same morning cos of stupid insomnia thingy caused by God knows what. 3 hrs sleep!!! omggg XD so want to eat tu kha peng (pork leg rice) and dunno where to go, so called Nard but didn't follow his recommendation anyway!! cos afraid will be losted..

so the Lynn said go Padungan and eat and try cos never before. i nearly died taking the photo cos in the middle of the road even tho was standing on divider thingy. what a lousy photo.

then also dunno the name of the kopitiam till now :S but is the first one when u drive into Padungan Road from the roundabout.so this is the inside and so CLEAN! wah lucky so far all reviewed coffeeshops are nice and clean and not lau kui(embarrasing). ok lar by msian standards is clean. forgot to take photo of stall cos so hungry already!i think is owned by grandma and grandpa people cos grandpa person came to take drinks order.

and ordered 2 iced lemon teas and came 1 ice lemon tea and one sengboi(sour fruit thingy) drink. so lynn cos so gracious took the sengboi cos i never liked it! she thinks grandpa person just anyhow makes the drinks and people feel too paiseh (bad[context]) to say no and just take and drink.
Kuching now has a rating system thingy and yeah so clean so got an A!! never been in kopitiam with A before~ woo~~sakainess! (provincal /hick/country bumpkin, as thought up by Jane and me) tried to take photos of grandpa person making drinks cos thought it would look quaint but so paiseh!finally came, not long wait pun~~ yum yum quite quite nice and better than wang shan wang (this is own opinion so please don't send gangster to beat me up :S) but sambal thingy was so spicy until lynn was ok no it wasn't cos of that, she just wanted to gross me out. didn't like the rice that much, too mien (overcooked n sticky [context]) for me but Lynn says all tu kha peng rice is like that. but dark soup thing was niceee and curry soup thing was nicee too~ so paid and omg BROKE! rm12 for both of us plus drinks. and then went to Swinburne Uni.
walk here and there and wait for Gab so sat in empty classroom on the 9th floor wahh view was v nice, but only accessible to lecturer during class , so unfair! after construction will be nice and pretty~ can see all the mountain ranges thingy. here is Lynn being forced to sit in the courtyard in Swinburne Cafeteria cos is an Aussie thing to do and the sky was SOO blue and beyoootifull!! sooo Aussie and made me misss.. :~~here is my trying-to-be-artsy-but-fail photo

so afterwards in car and postal person calls and says must pick up parcel before 4.30!! and is already 3.45!!! and why tell so late LAH!! lynn says i am siaw (crazy) cos talk to the postal person like my friend. but still! tell so late. so rush to post office and i was waiting in the car and thot oh so pretty the Harmony Arch but after take photo look so corny and cheesy.

and so she was sooo excited cos unknown person gave her parcel and this is she excitedly opening. ok doesn't look so excited but she was! but then...turned out that it was car things for her friend off ebay and directed to her address sooo disappointed.

so that is the end. may i never write like this again. is all very well for lynn but not meee. got another thing to post but no photos. later lah.

boring lazy day #1

reverting back to my slothful habits e.g no shower till 5p.m and was even too lazy to eat lunch. think partly cos i felt guilty about the porridge the night before :S no no this is not some slide into the gaping jaws of anorexia :D honest!

dad has gone fishing and left me alonnee till saturday. dinner was at his friend's shop on Rock Road, aptly named New Rock Road Cafe, how original :) i was promised 'the best tomato mee in Kuching'.that is mr. uncle in blue frying my mee. apparently he was a chef at the Rock Road Restaurant down the road (yeah they're great for coming up with names on this road :D) didn't take long, though i was DAMN starving cos of lack of lunch.

so here it is, with the obligatory tehsipeng that i feel compelled to order every single time i eat out. dad said it was a 'mickey mouse' operation (??!!), i was able to have my tehsipeng simply cos the guy who lives upstairs was around and made it for me. no guy, no tehsipeng :S

and damn the mee was good! even after the sauce had been poured over, the mee still retained its crunchy texture and wasn't floury at all. the sauce itself could have been improved a wee weeee bit, just slightly not enough tomato taste for me, but overall, WOW. i'll have to go to hui sing and see if that one is still better, but yeah this ranks top for me.

apparently this place has wifi as well -_- so if you ever feel like having a leisurely look through your email or blogging while having a plate of gorgeous tomato mee and a mug of thick, refreshing tehsipeng, New Rock Road Cafe is the place to be :D

fear of spiders - arachnophobia, fear of heights - bathophobia, fear of not getting a job..?

i spent all bloody afternoon in my dad's freezing office trying to finish up my CV and by 5 i still hadn't gotten it. maybe it was the cold. yeah, excuses, excuses. stressed out and went to find relief in the fridge at around 9pm. came in the form of:Wall's Italian Gelato range, Tiramisu flavour. wanted to drizzle a bit of Bailey's onto it but ended up practically drenching it instead. and no, it wasn't subconscious! bailey's icecream at Daily Scoop in Singapore is still the best tho :)

feeling completely 'pekchek' at 11.40 and surprise surprise AhB messages me on msn. that pretty much never happens so later when he told me Jo had asked him to call me, i wasn't surprised :| anything to get out of the house at that time tho, so off we went.

i didn't get a good photo cos of mr. orange backpack but the waterfront burgers are apparently pretty good as well, but a little more expensive than 'Salun Sue' 's lol. skipped on the burgers but had porridge at Petanak's, teochew people eating teochew food made by more teochew people. no photos :S i forgot again cos was amazed by the quality of the lap cheong omelette thing.

sitting in the car as he was driving thru town, the streets bathed in orange glow from the streetlights, just thinking about how beautiful it all was and how this will always be home to me, even if i can't stay. i didn't take a photos. but then for some things, you don't have to.

blatant advertising

when i was young, my parents would dump me at my grandma's cousin's house where his wife would baby sit for me. their only daughter was also my grandma's 'adopted' daughter, in that weird chinese way, so she was pretty close to my family. i used to think she was a fairy, she was so beautiful to me. ah, the idealism of 5 year olds ;)nah that's not her in the photo, it's my own adopted mother instead :D well anyway my aunt moved to penang, met a chef and got married, so they now open a nice clean 'kopitiam' on..erm...crap..what's the name of the road? ok ok that shophouse block has a Central Inn and a Soon Onn furniture store at the corner, on the left is Shuang Hian supermarket and on the right is a Shell station. someone help me out here? :S

they started out with 'cha zhu' (dishes and rice stuff) but they've recently added a breakfast menu, it's available from 7am - 12pm i think. and seriously omg the char kueh teow is GOOODD (fried hor fun)

that was my breakfast of the day. i love i love i lovee 'ham' (cockles)~!!!

prawn noodles...:)~~ wasn't in the mood for something soupy that morning but i had a taste and it was pretty good..ok no i'm not just saying it cos she's my aunt, i mean it's FOOD man! before anything else, i would be honest about that (dang it that sounds really bad ;))this is the menu for the night, i would recommend curry fish head, belacan chicken, and something not shown there, the bak pia, like a fried patty of pork mince and salted fish...wwoo baby my saliva is dripping lol

fooood glorious foooodd

my first home cooked meal in six weeks...it was sheer heaven..
clockwise from top: pineapple chunks fried with sambal, steamed chicken in soy sauce and shao xing, stir-fried pumpkin with local spinach

home sweet home...no fireworks tho..:~

finally back after my hiatus in 'the jing' :D yes i <3 BJ, it has given me so much. so, new blog, new address, same old name. photography skills still leave a LOT to be desired. and apparently what little writing 'skills' i possess has gone out the window, this being realised after i took a whole day to complete my CV. according to my dear dear Ms Humphries, all other languages get kicked out when you learn a new one. so hopefully this blog will help to kick-start 'the England' again :D

drove frantically to the bridge at 11.55 p.m, 30/08, to see fireworks but alas, there were none. I guess we forgot we were part of Malaysia? even the next day there wasn't any.. :( ah well at least we had fun draping an item-that-shall-not-be-mentioned-in-a-public-blog over our cars and...ourselves :Dwent to the usual place after that cos for some reason *aHem* evryone was starving. sio bao and yam puff to the rescue!!

would it have been better to have taken the chicken rice instead? oh well, there's always next merdeka :)
